17147 (2026). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Education: Does the new SMART tool allow students to sit adaptive tests in on-screen format only and if not, why not?

Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised that the Student Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting Tool (SMART) will provide linear assessments in 2026, and transition to adaptive assessments in 2027. Adaptive tests require a substantial pool of validated items proven to work in the New Zealand before they can be provided to students.
