17138 (2026). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Education: What benefits, if any, are gained by ensuring that the national curriculum is aligned with those used internationally and with what international curriculum will New Zealand be most aligned?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised that the Ministry of Education has surveyed curriculum across multiple international jurisdictions. The national curriculum is not modelled on any single international curriculum. However, ensuring the national curriculum is informed by international best practice supports curriculum quality by drawing on global evidence about effective teaching and learning. Therefore, international evidence is considered alongside knowledge specific to New Zealand learners to ensure the curriculum reflects New Zealand’s unique context. Awareness of internationally recognised knowledge and skills also helps ensure learners are prepared for an increasingly interconnected world, including those who move between education systems or pursue further learning and employment internationally.
