16809 (2026). Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: Does the Minister consider patent laws fit for purpose in emerging technologies; if not, why?
Cameron Brewer: I am aware that emerging technologies are raising evolving questions for patent systems, as well as other forms of intellectual property, internationally. At this stage, there are no plans to adjust New Zealand’s patent laws. The Government will continue to keep existing patent settings under review, informed by developments in comparable jurisdictions and international fora, as part of its ongoing consideration of how the intellectual property framework supports innovation as technologies develop.
