16368 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Tertiary Education: How much philanthropic funding, if any, has been approved to deliver to the Waikato Medical School, and what is the total value of philanthropic funding, if any, that was committed when approving the Waikato Medical School?
Hon Penny Simmonds: The Government has approved $82.85 million to support the establishment of the New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine, with the University of Waikato responsible for funding the remainder (approximately $152 million).
The University of Waikato intends to raise a portion of its contribution through philanthropic sources. The level of philanthropic targeted and achieved is a commercial matter for the University and was not approved by Government.
I suggest the member refers any further queries relating to philanthropic funding directly to the University of Waikato.
