Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister responsible for RMA Reform: Did the Minister ignore the agreement by the majority of the Expert Advisory Panel that ‘future legislation should retain the existing RMA mechanisms for Māori participation and make further provision for Māori engagement’, if yes, why?

Hon Chris Bishop: No. I agree in principle that the new system should include mechanisms for Māori participation that are relevant and help achieve the purpose of the Acts. I will be provided with advice from officials regarding the existing provisions for Māori participation in the RMA and will decide how they should be incorporated in the new system to make sure they are fit for purpose.
