16310 (2025). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Universities: Does the Minister agree with the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) that 'Tertiary Education is key to unlocking productivity and economic growth' and if so, why is the TEC set to have their funding cut by a further $12 million?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: The TEC is consulting its staff on an organisational change programme to support the Government's priorities and supporting the efficient and effective delivery of their core functions. In this context, the TEC has been asked to make 5% ($2.9 million) savings from its annual operating budget. A consultation document was released to staff on 26 March for their feedback. The TEC expect to make their final decisions on the organisational structure in May. The Government is focused on building economic growth through skills development. Tertiary education is key to improving the lives of students and contributing to a skilled workforce. I have been assured that proposed changes to TEC’s operating budget will not impact its focus on delivering better outcomes for students and supporting the government’s economic growth agenda.
