16306 (2025). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Universities: Does the Minister agree with Universities New Zealand that 'post-employment outcomes are good for most degree-qualified graduates – both STEM and non-STEM.', and if so, will he commit to ensuring that going forward the government will take a balanced approach to the funding of both STEM and non-STEM degrees?
Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that post-study employment outcomes are good for most degree-qualified graduates, with very low unemployment rates and higher wages than non-graduates, although wage premiums differ significantly between subject areas. The Government provides significant funding to universities and other tertiary education organisations via the Tertiary Education Commission. This investment aims to help equip New Zealanders with the knowledge and skills they need for lifelong success.
