Written Question

16288 (2025). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Associate Minister of Education: Further to the Associate Minister’s answer to Written Parliamentary Question 12562: Is the Associate Minister confident he is getting a full picture of how much waste his school lunch programme is generating, given the Ministry does not hold information around the number of meals not returned to meal providers?
Hon David Seymour: The Ministry of Education has advised it measures the number of surplus meals returned to a supplier kitchen, and the weight of other waste collected from schools. School surveys sent each term may provide further information about the disposal of meals that are not returned to the supplier, such as meals that are composted, disposed of in landfills, or distributed to community groups. This is no different than previous iterations of the school lunch programme. This is also my response to written parliamentary questions 16289, 16291 and 16292 (2025).
