16276 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister for Trade and Investment: What actions, if any, is the Government planning to take in response to the United States of America placing tariffs on New Zealand that were publicly announced on 3 April 2025 (NZDT)?

Hon Todd McClay: I have asked officials for advice in response to the tariffs placed on New Zealand by the United States. New Zealand’s bilateral relationship with the US is strong, and we will continue to engage with the US, and with New Zealand exporters, to better understand the impact of this announcement and our options moving forward. New Zealand will continue to advocate for a rules-based trading system. The New Zealand Embassy in Washington will continue to pursue engagement with US officials and political figures to advocate for New Zealand’s case that tariffs should not be applied to us. Opportunities for further engagement at Ministerial level will also be actively sought, including at the APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade in mid-May and in the context of the OECD Ministerial Council meeting in early June.
