16265 (2026). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister for Energy: Does the Minister think that New Zealand's reliance on imported fuel leaves it exposed to foreign conflicts beyond its control?
Hon Simeon Brown: I am advised that New Zealand imports its fuel and, like all fuel-importing countries, is exposed to global market conditions, including geopolitical events beyond its control. That is why the Government manages this exposure through the Fuel Security Plan, which includes minimum stockholding obligations on fuel importers, diversified supply sources, coordination with industry, and international cooperation through the International Energy Agency. These measures are designed to reduce risk, manage disruptions, and prioritise essential services if global conditions deteriorate.
