16221 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Education: What percentage of schools, if any, used coal boilers as a fuel source for heating or energy in 2024?

Hon Erica Stanford: I refer the Member to the attached table showing the percentage of schools that used coal boilers as a fuel source for heating or energy by calendar year. Please note that the Coal Boiler Replacement Programme was established in 2020. It replaced 148 coal boilers across 134 New Zealand schools. The last school coal boiler was turned off in April 2025. The programme was funded through a $54.8 million capital injection in Budget 2020, and $20 million in Budget 2022. This is also my answer to written parliamentary questions 16222, 16223, 16224, 16225, 16226, 16227, 16228, 16229, 16230, 16231 and 16232 (2026).
