16053 (2025). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister for Infrastructure: Will the Minister ensure that any projects approved through the fast-track process are subject to cultural impact assessments led by iwi or hapū; if not, why not?
Hon Chris Bishop: The Fast Track Approvals Act 2024 requires applicants to consult with relevant Māori Groups (including iwi authorities and Treaty settlement entities) before lodging an application.
I, in my capacity as the Minister for Infrastructure, and the expert panel are required to invite written comments from relevant Māori groups regarding referral and substantive applications respectively. This provides opportunities for Māori groups to articulate their values and perspectives. Fast-Track applicants may choose to commission cultural impact assessments from iwi or hapū to inform their application.
