15523 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Internal Affairs: How many litres of diesel, if any, did the Minister’s department’s, agencies, crown entities or any other bodies that the Minister is responsible for, if any, consume to power or heat buildings in 2025?
Hon Brooke van Velden: Department of Internal Affairs: I am advised by the Department of Internal Affairs that diesel has not been consumed to power or to heat buildings between 2020 and 2025 on an ongoing basis. Classification Office: I am advised by the Classification Office that their heating/power is 100% electricity. Lotto NZ: I am advised that the building Lotto NZ is headquartered in is powered by 100% electricity but has a diesel-powered generator on standby for emergency use. During the specified period there was one power outage that required the generator to run for 30 minutes. Fire and Emergency New Zealand: I am advised that Fire and Emergency New Zealand records diesel consumption for stationary energy on a financial year basis. This information is derived from emissions reporting using the best available data and may include or exclude some diesel use not directly related to powering or heating buildings, such as generator use at incidents. Fire and Emergency New Zealand began separately accounting for stationary diesel use in the 2021/2022 financial year. Limited data is available for 2020/2021. On this basis, diesel used to power or heat buildings is estimated as outlined in the attached table.
