15345 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Corrections: How many people, if any, left prison in 2024 after serving a sentence of less than 24 months, broken down by most serious offence type?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections manages people on sentences and orders at the direction of the Courts and the New Zealand Parole Board. Corrections does not determine whether a person is sentenced to prison or the length of their sentence. I refer the member to the attached table which provides the number of unique people with an imposed prison sentence length of two years or less who had their first release from prison between 01 January 2024 and 31 December 2024, broken down by their index offence type.
