15312 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Housing: How many tenancies, if any, were terminated by Kāinga Ora in each quarter since January 2023 for family violence?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that it does not terminate tenancies due to family violence. Doing so could place the victim at further risk and contribute to housing instability for vulnerable individuals. Instead, Kāinga Ora works with relevant agencies to offer support, such as transferring the victim to a safer home, implementing safety measures, or offering alternative housing solutions. Under Section 56B of the Residential Tenancies Act tenants and other specified individuals can withdraw from the tenancy if they need to leave to avoid or escape family violence.
