15166 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What, if anything, is the average travel distance for students to get to their Urban schools; listed by average travel distance per region?

Hon Erica Stanford: I refer the Member to the attached table, showing the average distances travelled by students who attend urban state or state-integrated schools between home and school by Education Region. I am advised by the Ministry of Education that distances were calculated using student home addresses and attending school details as provided in the July 2024 school roll returns. Urban schools are located in areas with an Urban Indicator, as determined by Statistics NZ, which includes major, large, medium, and small urban areas. The average distances were calculated using information for 711,697 students attending 1,599 urban schools.
