14586 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Local Government: What role, if any, will the Commerce Commission play in ensuring that Watercare remains financially sustainable while maintaining service quality?

Hon Simon Watts: The Commerce Commission, (as Crown monitor of the Water Charter), will provide oversight of Watercare’s compliance with the Charter. Watercare will also be subject to robust reporting requirements, providing the Crown monitor with a detailed picture of Watercare’s business operations. The price quality pathway in the Charter provides adequate revenue for Watercare to cover its operational costs and repayment of any debt may be required to deliver on Watercare’s long-term capital programme, and assurances on the quality of service provided by Watercare.
