14112 (2025). Hon Rachel Brooking to the Minister of Conservation: What consultation, if any, was undertaken with external scientists before proceeding with the current biopsy sampling of Hector’s dolphins off Otago’s coast?

Hon Tama Potaka: I am informed by the Department of Conservation that it consulted directly with genetics researchers from Otago University and University of Auckland, including with long-time researchers studying Hector’s and Māui dolphins from the University of Auckland. I understand all New Zealand researchers who choose to actively be involved in research planning and the Department of Conservation’s work on Hector’s and Māui dolphins are invited to participate in annual regional forums.
