Hon Shane Jones: No proportion of New Zealand's fuel imports physically transit through the Strait of Hormuz. However, around 90 per cent of New Zealand's fuel is sourced from Asia, and a significant share of the crude oil processed by Asian refineries originates from the Middle East, with more than three quarters typically transiting the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, New Zealand can be indirectly affected by disruptions in the Strait through impacts on global oil markets, refining margins, and prices, rather than through direct disruption of fuel shipments to New Zealand. The Government monitors how global disruptions may indirectly affect fuel supply and pricing rather than relying on a single route-based metric.
