13955 (2026). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Associate Minister for Energy: What proportion of New Zealand’s total fuel supply is imported refined fuel, and from which countries?

Hon Shane Jones: Following the closure of the Marsden Point Refinery in 2022, New Zealand no longer refines petroleum products domestically. As a result, all refined petroleum products used in New Zealand are imported. Based on Stats NZ public trade statistics on the value of imports, of New Zealand’s refined fuel imports over March 2025 to February 2026 inclusive: • 49 per cent came from South Korea, • 33 per cent from Singapore, • 9 per cent from Malaysia, • 4 per cent from Japan, and • 5 per cent from other countries. Notes: • Data on country of origin sourced from Stats NZ trade statistics and may differ slightly from those derived using alternative datasets (e.g. minimum stockholding obligation information disclosures). • The following HS codes have been used: 2710193200 for diesel, 2710191600 for jet fuel, and 2710121919 and 2710121910 for petrol. • Proportions calculated based on the CIF (cost including insurance and freight) value of imports, using Stats NZ imports data from March 2025 through February 2026; data from December 2025 through February 2026 is provisional at this stage.
