13909 (2026). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Will onboard cameras on commercial fishing vessels be required to operate port-to-port?
Hon Shane Jones: The Fisheries (Electronic Monitoring on Vessels) Amendment Regulations 2025 came into force on 18 December 2025.
These amendments clarify that on-board cameras must be switched to "active" and recording during in-scope fishing, fishing-related activity (such as sorting), and while transiting to and from fishing locations. On-board cameras do not need to be recording at other times such as when at anchor, drifting, or powered down, and if no monitored fishing and related activities are being carried out.
