13739 (2026). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Police: How does the Minister ensure custody safety and monitoring standards are applied consistently across all Police districts?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Police hold operational responsibility around ensuring that custody safety and monitoring standards are applied across all Police Districts. I am advised by Police that standards are applied consistently across all Police districts through nationally governed oversight mechanisms. This includes conduct quarterly audits of custody records; the Quality Assurance and Improvement Framework (QAIF) being presented to Executive governance groups for oversight and monitoring; and collaborative efforts with our wider Justice partners, The Department of Corrections (Ara Poutama Aotearoa), Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children and The Ministry of Justice.
