13418 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: Further to Reply 10781 (2024); What different tactics, if any, have Police utilised in responding to retail crime?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Police utilise the following tactics to respond to retail crime:
• Increased accessibility for victims to report lower-level offences through Auror. This allows Police to connect multiple events to subjects and assists in building comprehensive profiles on people who shoplift.
• Fast Track which is a Police and Oranga Tamariki jointly led initiative that focusses on immediate and joined up responses for children and young people demonstrating serious and/or repeat offending behaviour
• Police continues to work alongside the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to deliver programmes (the Retail Crime Prevention Programme and the Fog Cannon Subsidy Scheme) that provide prevention measures to support retailers to reduce their vulnerability.
Police will continue work to prevent, monitor and respond to retail crime.
