13342 (2024). Hon Julie Anne Genter to the Minister of Conservation: How much, if any, money will be saved by the Department of Conservation's proposed restructuring of its Chatham Island operations and how are the savings calculated?
Hon Tama Potaka: The Department of Conservation advises that the proposed restructure on the Chatham Islands has not been driven by funding and cost savings. It is intended to deliver greater value, or conservation benefit, for the same level of financial investment.
By taking a more agile and flexible approach to the use of resources, more conservation work will be undertaken on the Chatham Islands.
The drivers for the operational review are:
• Addressing longstanding staff wellbeing issues
• Increasing the amount of conservation work we are delivering on island (improved conservation outcomes)
• Increasing collaboration and capacity building within the island community and thereby improving resilience for critical conservation work at place.
