13340 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How many people have been offered employment as a corrections officer at Waikeria prison, if any, since 29 February 2024?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Corrections has received 2,070 applications for Corrections Officer roles at Waikeria Prison between 29 February 2024 and 26 May 2024. During that time, 38 were offered employment contracts. I am further advised that job advertisements can be open for varying lengths of time, with interviews occurring after the closing date. The recruitment process for frontline staff is typically 10-12 weeks as Corrections undertakes a rigorous recruitment process to ensure people meet the requirements for the role. This recruitment process includes multiple assessments to ensure their suitability for the role. Due to the high level of integrity required of staff working in prisons, thorough pre-employment checks must also be carried out. These include Police vetting, drug testing, a physical fitness test and medical check, and a reference check prior to employment. Therefore, the application process for a large number of those that have applied during this time is ongoing and has not concluded. This is also my response to WPQ 13341 (2024).
