13294 (2026). Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: How many inpatient beds are there currently available for youth in acute mental health need, in Otago and Southland, if any?
Hon Matt Doocey: I am advised that Health New Zealand has three acute child and adolescent inpatient facilities, located in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
I am further advised that the Child and Family Unit at Starship Hospital in Auckland has 18 beds, and takes admissions from Northland, Waitematā, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Lakes, and Tairawhiti districts. The Rangatahi Adolescent Unit at Kenepuru Hospital in Wellington has 12 beds, and takes admissions from Hawke’s Bay, MidCentral, Whanganui, Wairarapa, Hutt Valley, and Capital and Coast districts. Ngā Kākano, at Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch, has 16 beds and takes admissions from Nelson Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Southern districts.
