12755 (2025). Camilla Belich to the Minister of Customs: What is the total cost, if any, of any agency-organised conferences, workshops, and training events under the Minister’s responsibility since 27 November 2023, broken down by agency and event?

Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) records and analyses historical expenditure information on a monthly basis, therefore my response provides expenditure from 1 December 2023, not 27 November 2023. The total spent by Customs on agency-organised conferences, workshops and training events between 1 December 2023 and March 2025 is $868,150. This amount includes the costs associated with training Customs officers including the following: • induction of new Customs officers • officer safety and defensive tactics • arrest training • firearms safety • drug identification. Customs does not centrally record details of each conference, workshop or training event, therefore is unable to provide a breakdown of each event without undertaking substantial collation and I consider that the expense of answering your question cannot be justified. This response is inclusive of the Border Executive Board secretariat as the New Zealand Customs Service is the serving department of the Border Executive Board and the secretariat.
