12753 (2024). Arena Williams to the Minister for Building and Construction: What percentage of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gases are from the construction and operating of buildings?
Hon Chris Penk: Using a consumption- based accounting approach around 21 per cent of New Zealand’s domestic long lived greenhouse gas emissions are from the construction and operation of buildings. This estimate is based on data from the 2021 calendar year. Of the 21 percent, around 6 percent of emissions are from constructing and maintaining buildings. The remaining 15 percent is from the energy and water used to operate buildings.
