12743 (2025). Camilla Belich to the Minister of Corrections: What is the total cost, if any, of any agency-organised conferences, workshops, and training events under the Minister’s responsibility since 27 November 2023, broken down by agency and event?
Hon Mark Mitchell: As one of New Zealand’s largest public service departments, Corrections employees over 10,000 staff and is responsible for managing around 10,600 prisoners and approximately 26,000 people in the community. Corrections manages 17 prisons and a significant number of Community Corrections sites across the country. I refer the member to the attached table, which provides a list of the total amount Corrections has spent on national workforce training between 1 December 2023 and 28 February 2025, broken down by training event. I am advised that some training undertaken by Corrections is legislatively required, such as under the Corrections Act 2004, Bail Act 2018, Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and Public Finance Act 1989. I am further advised that costs can include travel, meal and accommodation for those staying at Corrections’ Learning and Development Centre. I am further advised that due to limitations in reporting, Corrections can only report on this information by full month, and therefore, information for the end of November 2023 and start of March 2025 is not able to be provided for the purposes of responding to this request.
