12725 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: How many New Zealanders are licensed to possess semi-automatic firearms?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I have been advised that a standard firearms licence enables a person to possess and use a semi-automatic centrefire shotgun with a non-detachable magazine capable of holding up to 5 cartridges. As at 30 April 2024, there were 235,011 standard firearms licence holders in New Zealand. As at 30 April 2024, 3,963 licence holders were authorised to live fire a semi-automatic pistol on a certified pistol range. Additionally, there are 323 persons authorised to possess and use (including firing live ammunition) a prohibited firearm for the purposes of pest control. The prohibited firearms used for pest control can be semi-automatics.
