Teanau Tuiono to the Minister of Conservation: Is the Minister aware of reports that dozens of marine mammals, including protected species, were killed inside marine mammal sanctuaries during the 2024–25 fishing year; if so, what action, if any, has been taken or will be taken in response?

Hon Tama Potaka: I am aware of bycatch of a number of seals and dolphins in marine mammal sanctuaries in the 2024--25 fishing year. I understand that officials from the Department of Conservation and Fisheries New Zealand monitor bycatch closely. There are ongoing efforts to mitigate the impacts of fishing and officials work closely with the fishing industry to take action as deemed necessary to prevent population declines.
