12423 (2026). Lemauga Lydia Sosene to the Minister of Internal Affairs: Does the classification of Fire and Emergency New Zealand as a critical customer mean that Fire and Emergency New Zealand will not have to ration fuel during a prolonged fuel shortage?
Hon Brooke van Velden: I am advised Fire and Emergency New Zealand is identified as a critical customer under the Government’s Fuel Response Framework and National Fuel Plan, reflecting its role as a life supporting service. This supports continued access to fuel to maintain emergency response capability.
I am further advised that, if required, Fire and Emergency will prioritise fuel use for critical emergency response and life-safety activities, while reducing non-essential and discretionary use where appropriate, in line with the all-of-government response.
