12167 (2026). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Associate Minister of Housing: How many instances of client fund misappropriation or mishandling by property managers, if any, were identified by MBIE or Tenancy Services in the period between November 2023 and March 2026?

Hon Tama Potaka: There have been 69 instances in the time period of November 2023 and March 2026 of property managers as landlords not meeting their obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act relating to bonds. These instances are for not lodging a bond, not lodging a bond within required time, and failing to issue a required receipt. However, MBIE does not have responsibility for client fund misappropriation or mishandling by property managers. If landlords have issues with their property manager misappropriating or mishandling client funds, the landlord can take this up the Police or lodge their dispute with the Disputes Tribunal.
