12089 (2026). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: How many MRI machines in New Zealand's public hospital system would be affected by a helium supply disruption?
Hon Simeon Brown: I am advised that all Health New Zealand MRIs require helium to operate; however, they do not require the addition of helium on a day-to-day basis. I am further advised that there is currently no disruption to the helium supply for MRIs. Health NZ’s suppliers have contingency plans in place to ensure ongoing supply, including the ability to source helium from multiple regions.
