11755 (2026). Camilla Belich to the Minister of Statistics: What specific roles, by title and unit, were disestablished at Statistics New Zealand in the year to 31 December 2025, broken down by the date of disestablishment, any redundancy costs, and the number of functions that have since been transferred to another agency or contracted to external providers, if any?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: Budget 2025 required Stats NZ to return $6.2 million in baseline internal learning and capability development funding over four years and this equated to around 50 percent of current funding for corporate learning and capability. I am advised by Stats NZ that following an independent review and consultation with staff and the union, the decision was made to centralise its core learning and capability development function into the People and Capability unit. The change resulted in the disestablishment of the Tangata Tiriti Learning Capability team with some of the roles moving into the centralised team. On 3 November 2025, nine roles were disestablished, including two which have been vacant. Two new roles were created. The total cost of redundancy for five positions was $179,879. Due to the low number of disestablished roles, the position titles are withheld to protect the privacy of impacted staff. The need to protect the privacy of these individuals outweighs the public interest in this information. None of the functions of the disestablished roles have been transferred or contracted to external providers. I am further advised that Stats NZ has demonstrated a significant uplift in Māori-Crown relations capability in recent years, which means they are now able to bring this specialist capability development back into its core People and Capability function.
