11646 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Justice: Does he stand agree with the Prime Minister’s statement, “we set up the metrics and the targets, which is the lower levels of crime", if so, what measurement is he using to track “lower levels of crime?”

Hon Paul Goldsmith: The targets and metrics set up to track “lower levels of crime” are: Reduced child and youth offending: - 15% reduction in the total number of children and young people with serious and persistent offending behaviour by June 2029. - Serious and persistent is defined as “committing 3 or more distinct offending events within 12 months where at least one of those offences committed has a maximum penalty greater than or equal to 7 years imprisonment”. - We will collect data and statistics on youth crime rates and report quarterly on progress through New Zealand Police data. Reduced violent crime: - 20,000 fewer people who are victims of an assault, robbery, or sexual assault by June 2029. - We will keep track with the New Zealand Crime and Victims’ Survey (NZCVS) that examines people’s experience of crime. - The advantage of this survey is that it captures crimes that are often unreported such as sexual assaults and family violence.
