11594 (2025). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Justice: On what date was he first advised of the need to amend the Electronic Monitoring provisions in the Bail Act?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: The Ministry of Justice first signalled to me on Thursday, 12 December 2024 that amendments may be required to the provisions in the Bail Act 2000 relating to authorised absences of defendants from their electronically monitored bail addresses.
The Ministry of Justice, the Department of Corrections, and the New Zealand Police prioritised further work on this urgent matter, so a joint briefing could be provided to me as soon as possible.
In that joint briefing, provided on Thursday, 20 February 2025, agencies advised that amendments to the Bail Act 2000 were required to address this issue.
