11561 (2025). Hūhana Lyndon to the Minister for Land Information: What role, if any, do cultural assessments of land have in consideration of the taking of land under the Public Works Act?

Hon Chris Penk: There is no statutory requirement for cultural assessments of land when considering the taking of land under the Public Works Act 1981. The Land Information New Zealand Guideline for the acquisition of land under the Public Works Act 1981 – LINZG15703 includes guidance on the acquisition of Māori land, which includes consideration of the overall impact on the Māori community from which the land is to be taken.
