11368 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: What is the number of individuals recorded on the National Gang List to date, if any, have a firearms license, by gang affiliation and region?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that, as at 15 May 2024, there are no validated gang members who have firearms licences with a Current status. Two current validated gang members have firearms licences that are being reviewed – one has a status of Considering Revocation – Suspension (Bay of Plenty) and one has a status of Expired and Wanted to Interview (Northland). I believe it is not in the public interest to release the gang names. Release of such information may lead to unintended consequences such as the creation of a competitive environment between gangs or provoking recruitment and inter-gang rivalry that could lead to perverse outcomes, such as an increase in serious offending and potential harm within communities.
