11291 (2024). Rt Hon Chris Hipkins to the Prime Minister: Does he stand by his statement “…we need consultants to actually train 8500 teachers between now and the end of the year”, and if so, what correspondence, if any, has he received that this statement is based on, by sender and date?

Rt Hon Christopher Luxon: Yes. This information was provided to me verbally by the Minister of Education. The figures are based on Ministry estimates that between 8,500 - 8,600 teachers need to begin their training before the end of 2024. This is based on a data gathering exercise in early 2024 to gauge the extent to which the workforce has been trained in structured literacy approaches.
