11288 (2026). Lemauga Lydia Sosene to the Minister of Internal Affairs: What is the total amount, if any, that Fire and Emergency New Zealand currently owes to the Crown in loans?
Hon Brooke van Velden: Fire and Emergency currently have two outstanding loans to the Crown. The total value of these loans is $88.3m. The largest relates to the $75.4m interest bearing loan from the Crown required to support deficits and maintain solvency following settlement of the collective employment agreement with the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) in 2022. The entire principal is still currently owed with the first repayment happening in June 2026. The second loan has a balance of $12.9m and relates to the outstanding balance of the $112m funding from the Crown to assist in the transition to a unified national fire service in 2017. The final payment for this will also be made in June 2026.
