11249 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Further to 7496 (2024), does the Minister believe that the 2018 research adequately addresses the issue of sea lion interactions with trawl nets and sealion exclusion devices (SLEDs), or are there concerns about gaps in understanding that need to be addressed in the future?
Hon Shane Jones: I am advised that the 2018 research on SLED efficacy resulted in a number of independently reviewed papers which are available on the MPI website. SLEDs are considered to be an effective mitigation measure that enable most sea lions to exit the trawl net and survive.
