11243 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: On what evidence, if any, was Te Whatu Ora/ Health NZ's director of living well Martin Hefford relying when he said that the shortage of general practitioners was predicted to grow to 1000 by 2033?
Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that the figure is derived from modelling outlined in Health New Zealand’s Health Workforce Plan. The modelling estimates the shortage of doctors (including GPs) by 2032, taking into account shifts in population, and how that drives demand. The Health Workforce plan can be found here: https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/assets/Publications/Health-Workforce-Plan/Health-Workforce-Plan-2023-2024-final.pdf
