11108 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: What specific measures are being considered or implemented to address the reported 600 percent increase in dolphin captures since cameras were put on boats?
Hon Shane Jones: I am advised that the increase in fisher reported captures of dolphins, verified by onboard cameras, is broadly as expected based on scientific models, previous trials, historical observer coverage, and overseas experience. For species like Hector’s dolphin, Fisheries New Zealand’s response to each Hector’s dolphin capture is guided by the South Island Hector’s Dolphin Bycatch Reduction Plan and ranges from a vessel-based response to an area-based response incorporating regional fleets; in both instances, if cumulative captures increase, management actions will escalate.
