11088 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety: What specific measures or initiatives are being undertaken to ensure that vulnerable workers, such as those at Gloriavale, are adequately protected and supported within the framework of New Zealand's employment laws?
Hon Brooke van Velden: The Labour Inspectorate’s role is to make sure workplaces comply with New Zealand employment legislation and that there is compliance with minimum employment standards.
As has been done in the Gloriavale case, our Inspectors investigate complaints when necessary. The Inspectorate also takes a proactive approach to site visits, investigations and audit programmes to find potential breaches of employment standards and identify threats to vulnerable workers.
When breaches are detected enforcement action is taken. However, where breaches are minimal and unintentional, the Inspectorate works with employers and employees to educate or resolve a complaint.
