11075 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Corrections: What policies and procedures did Corrections have in place to ensure that people on home detention were able to vote in the 2023 General Election?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Section 80 C of the Sentencing Act 2002 outlines the conditions that apply to people sentenced to home detention. Probation Officers may authorise people subject to home detention to leave their address for a number of reasons such as voting. This is done after a number of considerations are assessed and given to the person’s risk classification, upholding the integrity of the sentence, how the absence will be monitored and other risk factors. I am further advised that people on home detention can also authorise someone to collect voting papers on their behalf, or can have their voting papers sent to them by the Electoral Commission if they are unable to attend a voting station.
