11030 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: How does New Zealand's commitment to regional security and stability within the Pacific differ from the objectives and focus of AUKUS, if at all?
Rt Hon Winston Peters: New Zealand maintains an enduring commitment to nuclear disarmament and regional stability. Given the deteriorating strategic outlook facing New Zealand, the government has affirmed its commitment to enhancing New Zealand’s defence and security capabilities, including through recently announced funding for the New Zealand Defence Force. The government is also exploring potential opportunities for participation in Pillar II of AUKUS, which involves a range of non-nuclear advanced military technologies. Formal decisions regarding Pillar II would be a matter for Cabinet in due course.
