11027 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: Will the Minister consider expanding the protected habitat for Māui and Hector's dolphins?

Hon Shane Jones: Currently 32,675 km2 of New Zealand inshore waters are closed to set net fishing and 12,825 km2 are subject to trawl measures (closures and gear restrictions) to protect Hector’s and Māui dolphins. I am not proposing to expand this but would consider further area or method closures to ensure that a FRML is not exceeded in an area where a FRML has been set.
