10916 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: In response to Question 7504 (2024). What specific factors or findings from the further analysis by Fisheries New Zealand that led to the determination that FRMLs were no longer deemed necessary to manage the impact of the fishery on sea lions?
Hon Shane Jones: The advice received from Fisheries New Zealand on setting a Fisheries Related Mortality Limit for sealions in the southern squid trawl fishery is available on the Ministry for Primary Industries website. Factors considered in the advice include: submissions received, scientific information including trends in estimated sea lion capture information and population impact, and the use of Sea Lion Exclusion Devices (SLEDs).
