What specific metrics does WorkSafe use to measure the effectiveness of its interventions in reducing harm, and how does it ensure that these metrics reflect the diverse needs and challenges of different workplaces and industries?

Hon Brooke van Velden: I am advised that WorkSafe New Zealand measures the impacts of its engagements and assessments with PCBUs through the Impacts and Effectiveness Monitor (IEM). The IEM aims to capture feedback from people on their interactions with WorkSafe’s General Inspectorate with the focus of answering two important questions: 1) Do WorkSafe’s interactions with businesses result in changes in the way employers and workers behave, think, and feel in relation to work-related harm? 2) Are these interactions making a real difference to the health and safety of New Zealanders? WorkSafe also uses a range of work-related harm and exposures metrics to inform its engagement and enforcement activities, including injury and fatality data from WorkSafe, ACC, and Stats NZ and four major population-based surveys. This robust monitoring programme allows WorkSafe to segment harm exposures and health and safety attitudes and behaviors by industry group, worker and employer demographics and geographic region.
